CPD and Staff Development

Recent research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Professional Development has noted an increasing realisation that to be able to deliver the business strategy, there needs to be an understanding of business need and commercial awareness.

The survey found that only a quarter of businesses 25% are extremely aligned with the needs of the business, whilst two-fiths 40% are broadly aligned and 6% unaligned.

It comes as no surprise that the budget for staff development is related to the financial status of the business. Last year more than half of the public sector reported that budgets for staff development had been cut and the private sector presents a mixed picture, in the region of 75% reporting cuts and 25% increases.

Findings also indicate that head counts in the private sector have increased and businesses are using more external specialists to answer their staff development needs. In contrast, the public sector are twice as likely to reduce headcounts and less likely to employ the use of external specialists.

What is clear is that whatever the size of the investment or whether internal or external specialists are used, alignment is key.
